Application and Development of Nitrile Rubber (NBR)

11

Nitrile rubber, abbreviated as NBR, is a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile. After industrial production was first achieved by German company Faben in 1937, NBR foam was widely used in industrial sectors such as aviation, automotive, machinery, and chemical industry due to its outstanding oil resistance, heat resistance, good physical and mechanical properties, and process performance, as well as its affordable price. Nowadays, nitrile rubber is divided into various categories based on the monomer type, acrylonitrile content, Mooney viscosity, polymerization method, and raw rubber morphology it forms. There are many varieties and grades of nitrile rubber, but according to its processing performance and usage performance, it can be divided into two major types: standard type nitrile rubber and special type nitrile rubber. Standard nitrile rubber is a binary copolymer of propylene ester and butadiene, including different degrees of polymerization, namely hot and cold polymerized butyl rubber and soft butyl rubber. At present, it is mainly made of cold polymerized nitrile rubber, and there is also great development in soft nitrile rubber. Special type nitrile rubber includes ternary copolymerized based nitrile rubber, nitrile rubber with partial cross-linking structure (if the third component divinylbenzene is introduced into the composition to cause partial cross-linking in the molecular structure), liquid nitrile rubber and powder nitrile rubber.
